Quilts 4 Cancer
Barb Johnston, founder of Quilts 4 Cancer, knows firsthand what it's like to live with cancer. She is a survivor of breast cancer, and many members of her family have lived with and sometimes died of cancer. In 1986, she started Quilts 4 Cancer with her husband, Jim, in upstate New York. They moved to Pahrump in 1999. It is Barb's aim to give a handmade quilt to as many cancer patients as possible. Volunteers throughout the country create quilts for children. The organization has recently concentrated local efforts on quilts for adults
undergoing cancer treatment in Nye County. "Being treated with chemotherapy makes you feel
cold all the time," says Barb, yet warmth is not the key purpose in providing the quilts. "Just
to know someone is thinking and caring about them is what we hope the cancer patients get
from receiving the quilts," she says. She values the positive response she receives from cancer
patients. Barb is always looking for new quilters as well as donations of money and fabric. A
$30 donation is enough to create one adult-size quilt. Like many quilters, Barb finds quilting
a relaxing hobby. Reach out and help Quilts 4 Cancer wrap cancer patients in serviceable
handmade quilts crafted with love.
