Chincoteague Pony Centre
All of the ponies at the Chincoteague Pony Centre are from the wild herd of Assateague, and you won’t need binoculars to see them. Interaction with these beautiful animals is the focus. You could pet them, ride them and possibly even clean their hooves. Owner Richard Conklin, who has been in the hotel business on Chincoteague for decades, listened sympathetically to tourists who went out to Assateague hoping for a close encounter with the ponies, only to catch just a distant glimpse, if anything at all. He teamed up with horse trainer Kendy Allen and opened the centre in 2000. Home to healthy, spirited ponies that Richard has bought at auction, Chincoteague Pony Centre offers many ways to get to know the residents, including three-day summer camps for children between the age of five and 12. Packed with fun and educational activities, these camps teach children everything from how to clean a hoof to the differences between English and Western riding. A pony ride every day is part of the package. The gift shop at the centre carries Marguerite Henry’s well loved children’s books about Misty of Chincoteague, an array of Misty collectibles and other horse-related gifts.
