Birch Creek Music Performance Center
In the fields and woods of Door County lies a beautiful stone and wood barn, transformed into a performance hall, and farm buildings, remodeled as classrooms and dormitories. This is Birch Creek Music Performance Center, a summer music academy. Birch Creek provides intensive performance-based instruction to promising young musicians. Because of the performance orientation, Birch Creek presents over 30 concerts from June to mid-August. These concerts have become popular tourist attractions, anticipated by visitors and local residents. Guest performers often participate in the student concerts. Birch Creek students study one of three musical genres: symphony, percussion and steel band or big band jazz. Birch Creek also provides free outreach concerts at community sites, such as parks, churches and nursing home facilities. Volunteers from the local community help make the Birch Creek experience possible. Birch Creek has a student-teacher ratio of 2 to 1. The faculty comes from universities and schools of music throughout the country, from the University of Colorado to Indiana University. The 200 students of Birch Creek come from all over the country. Most are from 14 to 18 years old. A scholarship program is available. Even if you do not know a young musician who can take advantage of the Birch Creek Music Performance Center’s summer program, if you are nearby in the summer, you will want to take in one of Birch Creek’s excellent concerts!
