About three miles as the crow flies from the Lucky Bart Gold Mine, you'll find the home of Josiah Beeman. His gold mine was so profitable in its day that in 1901, Josiah built a rambling, two-story home for his wife and young family. A devastating fire gutted part of the meticulously built house, and afterward repairs were never completed. Josiah and descendents of the family lived in the house until 1993, when members of the Gold Hill Historical Society purchased it as a permanent home for their museum. That same group of volunteers lovingly restored the home to its former glory, making it the hub for all things historical in the city of Gold Hill. A warm, comfortable atmosphere is evident the moment you walk through the front door. Volunteers here can give you an interesting tour, help you research information, or even locate photographs of long lost family members. The Gold Hill Historical Society actively provides educational activities for local schools, participates in annual community events and creates the ever-popular Haunted House for Halloween. Its volunteer members give countless hours of their time and share a collective love for things of historical interest. Local families have donated most of the GHHS collection with the confidence that their precious heirlooms will always be cared for with respect and admiration. The society is dedicated to its motto: Recording the Past for the Future. Josiah Beeman would have surely given his nod of approval.
