Bill’s Seafood
Bill’s Seafood brings together the service and quality of an upscale restaurant with the laidback style of Chincoteague. “It’s a step up without being stuffy,” say owners Kevin Crome and Steven Potts, who, in 1996, took over what has been a fixture of the Chincoteague scene since 1960. Describe Bill’s as you will, you certainly won’t need more than a second to find the right words for the seafood, steaks and chops. Succulent and delicious will co.....

Captain Barry’s Back Bay Cruises
Since 1988, Barry Fishman has been sharing his love of Chincoteague with all who hop aboard Captain Barry’s Back Bay Cruises. The boat pulls out from Landmark Plaza with a maximum of six passengers, so a good seat among a small group of adventurers is guaranteed. Even though you are on vacation, you might want to bring a notebook, because Barry’s knowledge of the history, lore and wildlife of this gorgeous island is encyclopedic. The Birding .....

Channel Bass Inn
You may safely suppose that John Winder, the original owner of what now is the Channel Bass Inn, was a people person. After all, he was the mayor of Chincoteague in the 1890s. Today, David and Barbara Wiedenheft own this lovely building with its six guest rooms and fill their role as innkeepers with personal warmth that follows in the Winder tradition. David and Barbara encourage socializing, meaning that if you pride yourself on being a sour pus.....

Chincoteague Pony Centre
All of the ponies at the Chincoteague Pony Centre are from the wild herd of Assateague, and you won’t need binoculars to see them. Interaction with these beautiful animals is the focus. You could pet them, ride them and possibly even clean their hooves. Owner Richard Conklin, who has been in the hotel business on Chincoteague for decades, listened sympathetically to tourists who went out to Assateague hoping for a close encounter with the p.....

Island Creamery
The ice cream at Island Creamery on Chincoteague is made in small batches today to be eaten tomorrow. On a busy summer day, the staff could scoop as many as 150 gallons of the cold stuff, all of it made from the highest quality ingredients. That means you are getting local fruit, pure vanilla extract and excellent chocolate. By year’s end, Island Creamery has usually served 35,000 waffle cones alone. Seasonal flavors, such as peach and blue.....

Mullers Ice Cream Parlour
When in Chincoteague, you could buy a quart of ice cream at a market, but then you would be missing out on the uniquely Chincoteague experience that awaits you at Muller’s Ice Cream Parlour. The Oyster & Maritime Museum, built as a tribute to the islands seafaring heritage, is the depository of the island’s history. The First Order Fresnel Lens from the Assateague Lighthouse is on display near the front entrance. You will also find nautical items on display, including model boats, fishing g.....

Refuge Waterfowl Museum
The Refuge Waterfowl Museum stands at the gateway to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and Assateague National Seashore, a testament to one man’s mission to preserve Virginia’s coastal heritage. That man is John Maddox, who has been building the museum piece by piece since 1978. His collection of waterfowl artifacts has grown from the arrowheads he picked up as a kid to include everything from antique guns, boats and traps to .....

Steamers
The folks at Steamers mean no disrespect to the many elegant restaurants on Chincoteague, but they believe that you will find the true island way of dining at their place. The fun begins when you order the all-you-can-eat steamed crabs. “We bring them out, dump them on the table, and you go at it,” says co-owner Robert Bash, whose name is certainly in keeping with a restaurant at which the server hands you a knife and a mallet. All joking aside, .....
